PORTUGAL

MAIA

The city of Maia is one of the most industrialised municipalities in Portugal and an important transportation hub, counting 120,111 inhabitants. Maia was the first Portuguese city to have a fast-charging parking for EVs, called the e-Hub, located in the city centre.

Use Cases

CHARGING SCENARIO: BUILDING/FACILITY PARKING LOT

Long-term V2B charging with load aggregation in parking lots for dynamic load balancing and BEMS integration

CHARGING SCENARIO: CHARGING STATION

V2G integration in public charging stations for addressing technical grid constraints

Expected impacts

Maia wants to demonstrate smart charging and V2X (vehicle to all) solution for parked EVs in two different contexts:

  • taking the advantage of the available flexibility brought by the batteries of EVs parked at the airport for long periods of time to promote V2B strategies
  • smart charging and V2G solutions designed for a LV feeder within the city aiming at keeping the grid within the technical parameters

Business model

The demo site is based on flexibility services offered by EV owners to the airport, enabled by medium to long-term parking in parking lots and integration with airport energy management system operations, while a reward scheme for EV owners is evaluated. This makes it possible to optimise airports tariffs through intelligent parking pricing. Furthermore, the city provides publicly available parking slots equipped V2G chargers where grid reinforcements is required.

Targets
