DriVe2X Talks: Vincent Ward

Watch the latest DriVe2X Talk focusing on the Isle of Wight and how EVs are integrated into the community.

In our new episode of the “DriVe2X Talks” video series, Vincent Ward from Future IOW highlights both the opportunities and challenges associated with the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) and bidirectional charging technologies on the Isle of Wight.

During the interview, it was discussed how access to charging infrastructure is perceived as a key barrier, particularly for residents of the isle without off-street parking. However, those already using low-carbon technologies such as solar PV and heat pumps viewed bidirectional charging as a natural next step in their energy transition journey.

The interview also highlighted the potential of vehicle-to-everything (V2X) technology to reduce the need for separate home batteries, enabling EVs to serve as flexible energy storage assets that support household energy needs.

“They’ll realize that the battery, if not needed, because the car will be the battery, it’s by people near to them, living near to them to hear that information from them, how they’re getting on.”

Importantly, residents emphasised the role of community engagement in building confidence around new technologies, said Vincent. As with solar PV adoption, seeing neighbours successfully use bidirectional charging could encourage wider uptake.

These insights reinforce DriVe2X’s mission to demonstrate how EVs can support a smarter, more flexible energy system while ensuring that future solutions meet the needs of local communities.
